  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Keep dogs where they belong

Letters to the Editor
Published June 19, 2006

Re: Dogs at restaurants raise concerns, not just legs, June 14 Times:

"Diapered dogs only."

That's what they should have on a sign outside their restaurant, along with the "No Smoking" sign. I'd rather have secondhand smoke than secondhand food on the floor from some dog.

If they want to treat dogs like people, then make them wear diapers or Depends when they come to dine at the restaurant, like babies, toddlers or some of the elderly who have to wear them.

What happens when a dog has a so-called accident on the floor and a waitress or waiter steps in it and drags it into the other dining areas? How about fleas or ticks, which I'm sure they all have, jumping on the servers and bringing them around other diners eating their meals?

You'll never catch me dining with dogs, and I'm sure many others feel the same way. Dogs belong in their own places - in a doghouse or in the yard.

You can bet that Governor Jeb, who signed this bill, won't be subjected to dining with dogs.

Two Trans-Hernando van drivers will be missed by the riders they helped

I am writing to tell the people of Spring Hill about a wonderful service and the people who provide this service to the elderly and disabled. It is the Trans-Hernando van service.

They have a wonderful staff of drivers who come and pick you up at your home and take you to doctors' appointments, banking, shopping.

If you qualify for the Americans with Disabilities Act, they will even take you to restaurants and places the regular van does not go.

These drivers are wonderful. They get out of the van and assist the handicapped, and they also transport people in wheelchairs. While they are driving they receive calls from the dispatcher telling them who is ready to be picked up.

This is done by giving the driver the number assigned to the client. They must acknowledge on their phone and then proceed to look up the client's number on their manifest.

All this done while they are driving and keeping an eye on their passengers.

They are truly wonderful people.

Sad to say, two of the nicest and most caring drivers were recently let go by Trans-Hernando.

All the riders want them to know that we miss them and feel very bad about how things turned out.

Sometimes life isn't fair. Alberto and Mauricio, we will miss you. We wish you well in your future endeavors.

-Marjorie Sawyer, Spring Hill
