Fiery rhetoric over Korea missile test

By ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published June 19, 2006

SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea appeared close Sunday to test-firing a long-range missile capable of reaching the United States, prompting the White House to warn of an appropriate response.

North Korea vowed to bolster its "military deterrent" in a burst of fiery rhetoric carried by its state news agency.

"There are signs" of an imminent missile launch, said Jung Tae-ho, a spokesman at the South Korean president's office.

"If they go ahead with a test, then we will have to respond properly and appropriately at the time," White House spokesman Tony Snow told CNN's Late Edition. He said he could not explain what that meant.

The New York Times reported Sunday that the North appeared to have fueled the missile, citing anonymous sources. The fueling is considered a critical step because its removal is complex.
