CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS The Citrus County Continuity of Care Council, an organization of local health care professionals, recently awarded scholarships to the following students who are pursuing medical careers in Citrus County: Kris Vermilyea, Valerie Bordeleau, Kathleen Reed, Kimberly Beckham, Shelly Signs, Megan Von Staden and Latonya Law. Funding for these scholarships is provided by sponsors and proceeds of the council's annual wine auction held each fall. This year's event, the 11th annual, will be held on Nov. 4 at Sugarmill Golf and Country Club. Due to the community's generous donations, over $35,000 in scholarships have been awarded to local deserving students over the past 10 years. Anyone who is planning a career in the medical field and is either currently in school or will be starting school, can apply by contacting Jan Marie Weatherford at Hospice of Citrus County, 634-5160. *** TOPS 607 met June 7 at the Floral City Community Building on County Road 48. Leader Elaine Moberley called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. The pledge to the American flag and Tops pledge were recited. Five members weighed in. A red strawberry was awarded to Roberta Hall who had the best weight loss of the week. She also had the best loss for the month of May. Elaine Moberley and Svea Johnson maintained their weight and each received a Turtle. Johnson gave the program. Roberta Hall gave the "Thought for the Day." On June 14, nine members weighed in. Caroline Pratt was the best loser for the week and received three red strawberries. Svea Johnson maintained her weight. Donna Gray won a gold strawberry for being a KOPS in good standing. Bettie Booth won tiki-tiki. Caroline Pratt won the card game. The program, by Roberta Hall, was on how to use and honor your American flag. It was a very good program and we all learned a lot. Thought for the Day by Roberta Hall was "Rainbows, mountains, troubles and friends". *** The Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church of Citrus Springs hosted the Christians United in Christ's quarterly Reunion of the Family of Christ. On June 6, the Rev. James Scherf, pastor of the host church, gave a warm welcome to all those in attendance. Musical selections, presented by Hope's Channel Chimes, was followed by the Scripture Reading by the Rev. Dan Lyman, from Hope Lutheran. Hope's Men Chorus sang Let My People Go. The Rev. Eric Peters, from the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church presented the sermon, after which Linda Bousl sang Let There Be Peace on Earth. At a brief ceremony, Marcy Boss presented a check for $5,000 to Jerry Rubino, administrator of the Dunnellon Ministerial Association. The money represented $4,000 raised at the Christians United in Christ's April Golf Tournament, and $1,000 matching funds from Wal-Mart. The money will benefit local people in need of assistance. Following prayers and Benediction, Hope's Channel Chimes presented another musical interlude. Refreshments and socialization at Luther Hall followed. VETERANS The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Ladies Auxiliary of District 7 held their elections and installation of officers for the ensuing year at a luncheon and meeting on May 21 at VFW Post 4252 in Hernando. Post and Auxiliaries from Citrus, Sumter, Marion, Levy and Hernando counties are included in District 7 of Florida. The following officers were elected and installed. Veterans of Foreign Wars: Commander, Robert Prive; Senior Vice Commander Wayne Carrignan; Junior. Vice Commander, Peggy Peardon; Quartermaster, Sidney Hatten; Judge Advocate, Sam Wasson; Surgeon, Samuel Jenkins; Chaplain, Hal Sistrand; 1-year Trustee, Fay Duffy; 2-year Trustee, Michael Mendez; 3-year Trustee, Tom Thurman and Chief of Staff, Sterling Hays. Ladies Auxiliary Officers are: President, Patricia Sistrand; Senior Vice President, Ellen Sherrod; Junior Vice President Genevive Carlisle; Secretary Fay Ziech; Treasurer Mary Martin; Chaplain Doris Crist; Conductress Therese Fortin; Guard Jayne Thompson; Patriotic Instructor Joan Sheehan and Trustees Sharon Hertz and Jean Hays.
