Couples celebrate decades together

Gloria and Chuck Lehr of Tarpon Springs celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last week. They were married June 16, 1956. They came here in 1978 from Newark, Del., and opened the Tarpon Sporting Goods Store, which they still operate. Previously Gloria worked for ITT Labs, and Chuck worked for General Foods. They have six children and 12 grandchildren. They are members of St. Ignatius of Antioch Catholic Church in Tarpon Springs, where Gloria is an active volunteer. Chuck is a member of the Pinellas Democratic Committee and ran for the state Senate in 1994. **** Beverly and Robert Maas of Clearwater celebrated their 61st anniversary with a party for friends and fellow residents at East Bay Nursing Center in Clearwater. They were married June 16, 1945, at the Methodist Church in Johnson City, N.Y., and came here in 1968 from there. Beverly retired in 1996 from United Medical, and Robert retired in 1997 from Honeywell. They had no children. They are members of First Christian Church in Seminole, and they enjoy bingo and still like to hold hands. **** Grace and George Miller of Largo celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last week. They were wed June 17, 1936, at the Wesley Methodist Church in Toledo, Ohio. They came here in 1973 from Toledo, where George retired as terminal manager for Motor Express. Grace is a homemaker. The Millers have two daughters, Barb Jayme and Joyce Barteck, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. They are members of First Baptist Church of Indian Rocks Beach and the Toledo Transportation Club. **** Largo woman celebrates her 100th birthday twice Mae Elsie Taylor celebrated her 100th birthday two times. The first was at Hope Presbyterian Church in Clearwater, where their was a potluck luncheon with friends in the church's Young at Heart group. Next, she joined family and friends for a special luncheon including piano music at the Wine Cellar on Redington Beach. Born on May 18, 1906, in Sterling Ill., to German immigrants Margaret and Charles Christian Schmidt, Elsie had two brothers, Carl and Ronald, and two sisters, Hazel and Virginia, all of whom are now deceased. Elsie was married on June 24, 1931, to John P. Taylor, who worked as a postal supervisor. They came here around 50 years ago and were married 45 years when Mr. Taylor died on May 22, 1976. She had two daughters, Sue Morrell and the late Tyme Hendry. She has four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Taylor enjoyed gardening and playing cards, especially canasta, gin rummy and solitaire. Her favorite times were traveling. She went to Hawaii in 1977 and enjoyed a 10-day cruise to the Caribbean. Her advice for living a long and happy life is simple: "Try not to worry and always enjoy your family."
