Celebrating the Who
By SEAN DALY
Published June 22, 2006
At 37 years old, that deaf, dumb and blind kid can still play a mean pinball. And unlike any other rock-operatic prodigy in music history, the Who's Tommy continues to inspire modern-day musicmakers. In a major gathering of homegrown chops, WMNF's 10-hour "The Who Are Alright" tribute at Skipper's Smokehouse Saturday will feature more than 25 area bay stars paying homage to Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and the London laddies. The event's grand finale will be a re-creation of Tommy (as performed on 1970's Live at Leeds album), featuring the surfy-loungey Vodkanauts backing up such singers as Freight Train Annie (performing The Acid Queen, no less), Ricky Wilcox and Ed Woltil. Of course, if you were always more of a Quadrophenia fan, there'll no doubt be plenty of that, too. Throughout the day, WMNF will also host an open mike contest and an acoustic afternoon set. All Who, all the time? I can't think of a better cure for (wait for it . . .) the summertime blues. ''The Who Are Alright" tribute rocks from 2 p.m. to midnight at Skipper's Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road, Tampa. $12 advance, $15 at the door, 11 and younger free. (813) 977-6474 or (813) 238-8001. - SEAN DALY, Times pop music critic
