Top five movies

By STEVE PERSALL
Published June 22, 2006

Current movies recommended by the Times:

1. A Prairie Home Companion - Director Robert Altman and an all-star cast turn Garrison Keillor's radio show into a memorable movie.

2. An Inconvenient Truth - The possible effects of global warming are presented by former Vice President Al Gore, whose personality also thaws out a bit.

3. Cars - Pixar, Disney and NASCAR. If that combination can't please moviegoers, the animation industry is in deep trouble.

4. X-Men: The Last Stand - Those Marvel Comics mutants continue the smartest superhero series in memory, with a positively Shakespearean performance by Ian McKellen as Magneto.

5. Keeping Up With the Steins - Call it My Big Fat Bar Mitzvah or an oversized sitcom, but Scott Marshall's movie is entertaining.
