AND MY FLU SHOT MADE ME KISS A CHICKEN The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advising Committee on Immunization Practices meets Thursday to consider whether to recommend making Gardasil, the new vaccine to prevent cervical cancer, mandatory. That status would affect insurance coverage and government funding for the medication, which will cost about $360 per dose. Opponents say the vaccine, which must be given to girls before they become sexually active to be effective, would encourage promiscuity. A HOME FOR HISTORY A coalition of Atlanta civic leaders and philanthropists hopes to prevail at the auction Friday at Sotheby's in New York City of the personal papers and library of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Sale price for the 10,000 documents and other items, including the draft of King's 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech, is estimated at $15-million to $30-million the family has specified it must be sold as a single lot. Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, former Mayor Andrew Young and others hope to keep the collection in King's hometown, probably housed at Emory University. FEZ FIESTA Don't try to find a hotel room in Tampa this weekend. Starting Saturday, the city will be hosting 20,000 folks for the Shriners International Convention. The six-day shindig will be the biggest convention ever for the city. The Shriners will indulge their penchant for parades on July 4 with an afternoon promenade down Bayshore Boulevard. BORDER PATROL If you're interested in this country's immigration problems, you'll want to track the election in Mexico on Sunday to choose the successor to President Vicente Fox (Mexican law limits him to one term). The two leading candidates, Manuel Lopez Obrador on the left and Felipe Calderon on the right, are only single digits apart in the polls. The man who gets the job will influence Mexico's economics and relations with the United States for six years. SHE'S WITH THE BAND It's birthday week for three actor-models who are also famous for their familial connections to rock stars. On Saturday, Liv Tyler (daughter of Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and wife of Royston Langdon of Spacehog) will be 29, and Pamela Anderson, Tommy Lee's ex, turns 39. Jerry Hall, Mick Jagger's former missus, will be 50 on Sunday.
