Brazilian star sets World Cup record
Ronaldo scored his 15th career World Cup goal, surpassing the record held by Gerd Mueller, in Brazil's 3-0 victory against Ghana on Tuesday. "It was never my goal. It just happened match after match," he said. "This is the result of lots of work, lots of sacrifice." Mueller scored his 14 goals in 13 games in 1970 and 1974. Ronaldo has played 18 in the past three tournaments. "I want to continue to increase the record," Ronaldo said, "but without forgetting that the main goal in the World Cup is winning the title."
DOWD ADVANCES: Dakoda Dowd, the Palm Harbor 13-year-old who dedicated her LPGA Tour appearance to her terminally ill mother, qualified Tuesday for the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship. She shot even 72 at a sectional qualifier in Peachtree City, Ga., tying for first and earning one of five spots in the July 17-22 event. "I'm really excited," Dowd said. "I'm looking at the application right now, and the place looks really nice." Dowd received a sponsor exemption for the Ginn Clubs & Resorts Open in April after organizers heard about her mother. Kelly Jo has bone and liver cancer and said she wanted to see her daughter play against the best female golfers in the world. Dowd missed the cut with rounds of 74 and 82.
