Woman accused of neglecting housemate, 86, and animals

Published June 29, 2006

TAMPA - A Dover woman faces 24 felony counts of animal cruelty and one count of adult abuse after Hillsborough County Animal Services impounded three birds, 22 dogs and a cat they found at her two-bedroom house.

Virginia Gayle Brewer, 51, of 13635 U.S. 92 E, also was charged with adult abuse in connection with the poor condition of an 86-year-old woman who lived in the house. Sheriff's officials say she was found dirty and badly neglected in a home that was littered and filthy.

The Department of Children and Families took the older woman into their care.

Authorities said some of the dogs had matted fur, were covered with fecal matter and exhibited behavioral problems.

All of the animals were taken to the county's shelter on Falkenburg Road for veterinary evaluations.

Brewer was released Wednesday from the Hillsborough County Jail on $55,500 bail.
