Turtle death halts Panhandle dune restoration project

By ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published July 2, 2006

NAVARRE BEACH - A dune restoration project in the Florida Panhandle was shut down indefinitely early Saturday after the death of a rare turtle, officials said.

The juvenile loggerhead sea turtle was killed around 1:30 a.m., said Peter Ravella of Coastal Technology Corp., which is overseeing the project for Santa Rosa County. The Navarre Beach restoration might be delayed until the end of turtle nesting season Oct. 31, Ravella said.

The project, which aims to add 3.4-million cubic yards and sand along 3.7 miles of beach on the island, was halted June 17 after crews found fragments of a loggerhead sea turtle shell in the screen of a dredge. A young Kemp's ridley turtle was killed by the same dredge in March.

A similar project in the Destin area has been suspended until Oct. 1 after dredging killed four sea turtles.
