Tiffany settles over teether allegations
Compiled from Times Staff and Wire Reports
Published July 4, 2006
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that luxury jeweler Tiffany and Co. has agreed to pay a $262,500 civil penalty to settle allegations that the company failed to report a hazard with its infant teether rattles. The commission alleged that Tiffany and Co. failed to report that the center bar on the Farm Teether Rattle could break, releasing small beads and animal figures that could cause choking and aspiration in babies. At least three reports of defective solder joints in the teethers were made between November 2003 and February 2004. The company stopped selling them in March 2004. Tiffany failed to notify consumers who had purchased the teether and did not report the problem to CPSC until after the commission had opened its own investigation. About 3,700 of the teether rattles, which sold for $150 each, were recalled in February 2005. Consumers with questions may call Tiffany and Co. toll-free at 1-800-464-5000 or log on to www.tiffany.com. The following products, distributed nationwide and in Florida, were recalled between June 23 and 30: * CFM Corp. has recalled 1,300 of its Sequoia wood-burning fireplaces because fire hazards that may be caused by insufficient insulation or a missing weld. They sold at authorized Vermont Castings dealers in Canada and the United States, including several in Florida, from Jan. 1, 2003, through April 2006 for between $2,200 and $3,000. It was included as original equipment on 2006 S-Works Tarmac, Tarmac Pro, S-Works Roubaix, Roubaix Pro, Allez Pro and S-Works Transition bicycles and as an after market item under the name S-Works Advanced Composite Mag Road Stem.
