DUNEDIN - Trevor Mathews threw all four innings as Countryside beat Palm Harbor 11-1 Sunday by the 10-run rule to capture the District 12 9-10 championship at Fisher Field.
"We had everything working," manager Terry Mathews said.
Countryside scored a pair of runs in the first, second and fourth innings and added five in the third. Michael Tagliaferro (3-for-3) had four RBIs and led a 13-hit Countryside attack.
"They turned it on," Mathews said. "That was the best we've hit all tournament."
Countryside completed a 5-0 run through districts and advances to sectionals in Tampa on July 15. Mathews said despite the strong hitting, the pitching staff is Countryside's best weapon.
"We can go five, six pitchers deep, legitimately," he said. "That will be critical at the next step because we'll play three games in two days."
Tommy Georgevich (2-for-3) doubled in the final two runs Sunday. Duncan Smalley (three RBIs), Bobby Held (two RBIs), Hayden Reynolds and Trevor Mathews each got two hits for Countryside.
10-11 BASEBALL: Palm Harbor beat East Lake 14-4 Sunday to win the District 12 Championship in four innings at Fisher Field. Palm Harbor built a 9-0 lead before East Lake battled back with four runs in the top of the fourth. Zach Koenn and Wade Reddick led the way on the mound for Palm Harbor, which starts sectional play July 22 in Tampa.
OTHER SUNDAY GAMES: Palm Harbor's Hannah Roberts struck out six in a rain-shortened 5-2 four-inning win against Safety Harbor in the 9-10 District 12 softball division. Rachel Taylor added a triple for Palm Harbor, which moved to 2-0 in pool play.
