Small but smoky fire hits Jabil plant

By TIMES STAFF WRITER
Published July 5, 2006

ST. PETERSBURG - A machine used to wash circuit boards caught fire in the Jabil Circuit Inc. building Tuesday, filling a portion of the electronics manufacturing plant with smoke, police said.

No one was injured in the fire at 10500 Ninth St. N, reported just before 5 p.m.

A sprinkler system prevented the fire from spreading, but generated "a tremendous amount of smoke," said Lt. Rick Feinberg of St. Petersburg Fire Rescue. Firefighters were still trying to air out the building four hours later.

A damage estimate had not been made late Tuesday, Feinberg said, and the cause of the fire remained under investigation.

Jabil employs about 60,000 people worldwide, 2,000 of them in St. Petersburg.
