The Largo-Seminole Community Chorus is in its 20th year of performing and as it kicks off its season this October, the group welcomes any newcomers who may be interested in joining.
"We don't do anything too difficult - most people are with us because they like to sing and have a good time," said Melanie McWilliams, the group's founder and accompanist.
McWilliams said the group, which performs seven or eight concerts a year at nursing homes, senior living communities and other venues, mostly covers Broadway show tunes and upbeat music.
The group has persevered through challenges, such as the time they arrived for a scheduled performance during the holiday shopping season at a now-closed department store only to be stuck in the back of the sportswear department.
"It was just awful. Nobody could see us and they didn't have any place for my keyboard. But I always tell the chorus, 'We outlived Gayfers, so we're doing all right!' " she said.
Another unexpected monkey wrench occurred when the group arrived at a social service agency to perform a holiday concert only to find that the agency had wrapped the piano to look like a Christmas present as part of its holiday décor.
"We told them they needed to unwrap the piano if they wanted us to sing," McWilliams said.
