Boating safety
By TIMES STAFF WRITER
Published July 7, 2006
Statistics show that 80 percent of all fatal boating accidents in Florida involve operators who have no formal training in boat handling. Statistics also show the typical boating accident is not a collision but a fall overboard or capsizing of a boat less than 26 feet. * The U.S. Coast Guard says there must be approved personal flotation devices on every boat. The number and type depend on the length of the boat and the number of people on board.* Florida law also requires every child younger than 6 wear a personal flotation device on any vessel less than 26 feet when it is underway. * Also, boats 16 feet or longer must have a throwable flotation device.
