India fires test missile with nuclear capability

Compiled from Times wires
Published July 10, 2006

NEW DELHI - India test-fired its longest-range nuclear-capable missile Sunday for the first time, government officials said. But while the missile launched, it was unclear whether the entire test was successful, with at least one report saying that the missile failed at some point during its flight.

The missile is reported to have a range of more than 1,800 miles. India's Defense Ministry said the missile was launched from Wheeler Island, off the coast of Orissa State in the Bay of Bengal, and took off successfully. Later, the Press Trust of India news agency quoted an unnamed military official as saying that the missile had developed troubles, perhaps during the firing of its second stage, and did not complete the test successfully.
