East Lake ace goes the distance despite delay
By BRANDON WRIGHT
Published July 11, 2006
DUNEDIN - Tony Floyd shook off a 45-minute lightning delay and tossed a complete game, leading Largo 4-3 past East Lake to win the District 12 Senior Baseball championship Monday at the Englebert Complex.
Floyd used his fastball and changeup exclusively through the first four innings before mixing in a sharp breaking ball for the final three. Floyd gave up six hits and struck out seven, including four in the last two innings.
"East Lake's a great team, but the guys really bore down tonight," manager Paul Floyd said.
Blake May sent a ball well over the leftfield fence for a three-run homer in the first to give Largo a 3-0 lead. East Lake bounced back with two runs in the third and the score remained 3-2 until the sixth when bad weather forced the delay.
Largo got a run in the sixth on a wild pitch and with runners on first and second in the seventh, East Lake's Kyle Westwood drove a single to leftfield. Mike Pepe scored from first on the play to make it 4-3, but Ryan Hughes was gunned down at third by leftfielder Cory List to end the game.
Largo advances to sectional play with the victory.
