BREMERTON, Wash. - Mitch Cohlmia of Tulsa, Okla., took a one-stroke lead Monday in the afternoon qualifying round over J.C. Horne of Daytona Beach, who was leading at the end of the morning round of the 81st U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.
Scoring a 4-under 68, Horne had a one-stroke lead over Martin Ureta of Chile. He recorded an eagle and four birdies at his first USGA event.
"I was hoping to just come out and shoot somewhere around par or maybe one over," Horne said. "It just gives me some cushion for tomorrow."
Horne, 18, is now tied for second with Scotty Jones of East Palestine, Ohio.
Stroke-play qualifying will continue today at the Gold Mountain Golf Club to reduce the field of 4,739 contestants to the 64 players who scored the lowest. Those 64 will continue onto match play Wednesday.
JUNIORS: In field of 63 players in the 16-18 age division, Judson Eustaquio, Tyson Alexander and Connor Arendell each scored a 4-under 68 to share the lead in the 52nd Florida State Boys Junior Championship at Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville.
"My putting saved me today," Eustaquio said. "There are still two more days to play, so I'm just trying to stay focus and play one shot at a time."
Julian Suri of St. Augustine hit a 5-under 67 in the 13-15 age division, giving him a four-stroke advantage. The Championship continues through Wednesday, July 12.
"I put my round together real well today," Suri said. "Tomorrow I just have to play my game and stay aggressive."
