SEMINOLE - It may be July, but Christmas is on the minds of members of the Seminole Junior Women's Club. The club's Cutting for a Cause fundraiser Aug. 6 will raise money for needy children and families during the holidays. "The money raised will go for food baskets and clothing for kids and families during the upcoming holidays," said Michele Abramo, an event organizer. The Seminole group - which is part of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, the oldest women's service organization in the world, Abramo said - works closely with Seminole schools to identify children and families who may need some help. "We send out letters to school guidance counselors and seek their help in identifying families and children that have special needs during the holidays," she said. The club serves elementary-level children who are enrolled in Seminole area schools. "These are not just kids who live in Seminole. They come from all over the county to attend school, but there are certainly people in Seminole who are struggling. Many of us who live in Seminole are very fortunate, but flukes like unemployment or illness can really make it hard for families, especially during the holidays. Things happen," Abramo said. Cutting for a Cause will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 6 at the Ambrosia Spa & Salon, 10333 Seminole Blvd. It is walk-ins only, first-come, first-served. Spa services offered at $10 each include haircuts, minifacials, minimassages and manicures. Staffers at the spa donate their time. Abramo said that she anticipates brisk traffic because the event is near the start of the school year. "We're thinking it will be a good time for kids to come in and get a nice haircut before school, and, hey, where can you get a spa haircut for $10? It's a great deal." * * * Community events this week at Seminole Mall, 11201 Park Blvd., include a dance contest at 2 p.m. today in the food court and a fashion show at noon and 3 p.m. Saturday. Information: 391-3489. * * * Freddie Hoover's Seminole Jamboree Country Band meets from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays at 11100 Johnson Blvd., across from Seminole Mall. Parking is in the Seminole Baptist Church lot. Parking and admittance are free. Musicians and singers are welcome. Information: 321-0252. * * * The Seminole Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony and mixer at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at RE/MAX Home Vision Realty, 9045 Park Blvd. Another chamber ribbon-cutting in Seminole is set for 5 p.m. next Wednesday at the new offices of John Burpee & Associates Commercial Real Estate Brokers, 12400 Seminole Blvd. Hors d'oeuvres, Cuban sandwiches, beer and wine will be served.
