ST. PETERSBURG - It's not too early to prepare for the back-to-school season, and area parents and students are invited to get a jump on health and safety issues at the Back to School Care Fair on Saturday at the Johnnie Ruth Clarke Health Center. The 10th annual fair features free physicals, immunizations and vision and dental screenings for children in grades K-12. The event is put on by the Junior League of St. Petersburg and the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Suncoast and is sponsored by a host community agencies. City fire and rescue officials will perform car seat safety checks and city transportation authorities will do bicycle safety checks. A limited number of helmets will be provided to those who need them. Backpacks and school supplies will be provided at no cost to students registered at the fair. Toddlers who haven't yet made it to kindergarten will get books, said Elise Minkoff, president of the Junior League of St. Petersburg. Minkoff said that she expects up to 1,500 children for the fair, but accommodations are being made for upwards of 2,000. The free Back to School Care Fair will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the center, 1344 22nd St. S. Most of the services performed will require students to register on-site with their parent or guardian.
