  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Gator dedicated on postage stamps

The American alligator is now on a stamp. One of 40 stamps depicting wonders of the United States, the gator stamp was dedicated Tuesday at the Everglades post office in Fort Lauderdale.

Rays in the tank join Rays on the ballfield

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays will release the first of the 30 cownose rays today into Tropicana Field's new 10,000-gallon tank. Team officials say the rays are unrelated to any future name change for the team, and that they can always add other marine life if they eventually choose another mascot for the team.

Supercomputer will better predict storms

Those annual hurricane predictions, where forecasters tell us to expect, oh, 800 named storms and 60 major ones, could get more accurate. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration just awarded Florida State University a $6.2-million, five-year grant that will allow researchers to develop a better prediction model for upcoming seasons. Researchers will use FSU's supercomputer - capable of performing 2.5-trillion calculations per second - to amass atmospheric, ocean, land and climate data.

Man should rest easy with donated alarm

Patrick "Blair" Stevenson, a quadriplegic, was scared to sleep in his house west of Brooksville after intruders broke in two weeks ago, beat him with his own pistol and even tried to steal his big-screen TV by using his wheelchair lift. Though the thieves haven't been caught, he hopes to rest a bit easier because First Alarm has donated a whole-house system that he can control with his fingertips. That should give him more peace of mind than he had Saturday, when he spent his first night at home since the robbery, downing NyQuil and having a friend stay until he fell asleep.

Correction

Two men died in a shooting Monday on Dolphin Drive in Hudson. The crime scene was near a mobile home park, but not inside it. A story Tuesday was incorrect on this point.
