Holiday doesn't halt all leagues

With Independence Day preempting some of Citrus County's major bowling leagues, high scores were limited for the first week of July. Among the leagues that took the week off were Neffer's Odd Balls League and Sportsman's Bowl's Junior League. One league that did meet for its regular competition was the Jim Lynch Fence Fun League at Beverly Hills Bowl. Larry Huxley was king of the bowling mountain for the county. Huxley tossed a 681 series on the strength of a 248 high game. Huxley's high game was second only to league mate Eddie Stromberg, who threw a 258 to highlight his night. Brian Carney and Will Bemis were right on Huxley's heels for high series with a 679 and 675, respectively. Carney is consistently among the top scores while retaining a 220 average. He has four career perfect games on his U.S. Bowling Congress achievement sheet, including his last one on April 3. Carney also tossed his only 800 series on Jan. 14. There also were some outstanding women's performances in that league as Dee Smith, placing sixth overall in the county, threw a 231 game to lead all females. Susan Sheehy was fourth overall with her 631 series. Neither Sheehy or Smith are strangers to high scores, as both are among the top female competitors in the area. Sheehy is a 200 average bowler that has a 300 to her credit from March 22, 2005. Smith is the league secretary and treasurer for the Summer Funtime League at Beverly Hills, the center's only other sanctioned summer league. SPORTSMEN'S SCORES: The other bowling center to maintain its regular league schedule was Sportsmen's Bowl in Inverness. The Summer Midweek League held every Wednesday continued as planned with Len Kemp leading the way on the overall board. Kemp's single-game high score of 225 was seventh overall in the county and his series of 555 placed 10th. Kemp is a 180 bowler who does not bowl as avidly as he once did. The Summer Midweek League is the only league Kemp is competing in and he did not register for a league during the 2005-06 season. But he does have a perfect game from Feb. 9, 2000. At the time, Kemp's average hovered around 210 while bowling in four leagues. Other Summer Midweek bowlers to make the list this week included Mark Wrightson with a 205 game and a 587 series, and Carlos DeSilva with a 556 series.
