ORLANDO - A high school special education teacher who also coaches in the Special Olympics and directs a choral ensemble of disabled students in Martin County was named Florida's Teacher of the Year Wednesday.

Conney Dahn, chosen from more than 180,000 public school teachers, will receive $10,000 and a $1,000 grant for Jensen Beach High School. She is also an automatic candidate for national Teacher of the Year.

Dahn was noted for creating a classroom independence that lets disabled students regulate their own behavior by grading themselves on a checklist. She also helped secure a grant that took the choral ensemble of 65 people to SeaWorld and Orlando to perform.

"My kids can learn," Dahn said. "I tell them, 'You're in high school, you act like a young man; you act like a young lady.' I won't take anything less."

The other finalists were Melissa Brinson, Suwannee Middle School in Live Oak; Lynn Carrier, Gulfstream Elementary School in Miami; Jan Graham, Elizabeth Cobb Middle School in Tallahassee; and Cathy Hardesty, Hill-Gustat Middle School in Sebring.
