San Antonio books return trip to state

SAN ANTONIO - A San Antonio all-star team has qualified for the Dixie Youth League state tournament a third straight season.

Only this time, the local contingent goes in as a district champion.

San Antonio's Senior Baseball squad ages 13-15 went 5-0 to win the District 6 title last week and begins play against Washington County in the double-elimination state series Saturday at 10 a.m. at Sebring.

Last season and in 2004, San Antonio's Major Baseball all-stars made state as district runnersup. San Antonio placed ninth last summer and fifth in '04.

"A couple of years ago when we went in for the first time, we didn't know what to expect at all," said Steve Mumaw, who has coached all three playoff teams. "The fact that they've been there before, they know what it's like. The expectations are a little bit higher."

Right-hander Kevin Gude pitched a two-hitter in the district final, a 12-1 win over Spring Hill. Gude, who struck out 10 and walked two, finished the series with a 3-0 record, 1.17 ERA and 25 strikeouts.

The title-game victory was fueled by San Antonio's 14-hit attack. Hunter Pike had a team-leading three hits. Bradley Sopp, William Angel, Kris Thomas and Gude contributed two apiece.

Additionally, Sopp, Angel and Pike each drove in two runs. Sopp scored three times.

San Antonio opened the district tourney with a 15-2 win over Belleview. Ensuing victories over Hernando (11-1), Spring Hill (2-1) and Belleview (18-12) set the stage for the final.

Mumaw called the Spring Hill game "the turning point." Pike, a right-hander, went the distance. He had a 1-0 record with a 0.58 ERA and 19 strikeouts for the series. Thomas, another right-hander, earned the other win and had five strikeouts in four innings of relief.

San Antonio has outscored opponents 58-17 in the postseason. Leading that high-powered offense are six players hitting .333 or better.

Pike and Thomas lead the team with .563 batting averages, two home runs and nine RBIs.

Angel hit .476 with six RBIs, followed by Gude (.444, six RBIs), Mumaw's son, Brandon, (.385, six RBIs) and Sopp (.333 and his first home run of the season).

Jordan Scharber, Harvey Sillers, Mark Christmas and Cody Alvarez round out the team.
