Campbell Park in RBI World Series

ST. PETERSBURG - Two youth baseball teams and a softball team, all from the same Devil Rays-sponsored organization, have won Southeastern regional titles and are bound for national competition next month.

The RBI League's senior boys (16-19 years old), junior boys (13-15) and girls softball (13-18) teams will play in the RBI League World Series starting Aug. 2 in Compton, Calif.

RBI stands for Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities.

Major League Baseball backs youth teams in cities across the nation, and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays sponsor teams that play at the recently renovated Oliver Field in Campbell Park.

Shawn Griffith, who recently pitched the local league's first no-hitter, threw a two-hitter and struck out nine en route to St. Petersburg's 7-2 victory over Atlanta in the senior boys title game.

In an earlier game against Atlanta, Donnie Albro shut out the Georgia team 5-0.

Albro, who will be a senior at Boca Ciega High School, throws in the 90 mph range, said Charles Dennis, RBI League director.

It was a sweet victory because Atlanta had beaten the St. Petersburg team last year in regional competition.

"They're always the team to beat," Dennis said.

The softball team won its World Series ticket by besting Tampa.

The junior boys defeated Miami in their championship game.
