Neighbors to bond over baseball game

Friday night is Neighborhood Night at the Devil Rays game, and while baseball fans watch the home team take on Baltimore, members of many neighborhood associations from around town will be in the stands bonding over peanuts and hot dogs. The annual salute to neighborhood associations is organized by the Council of Neighborhood Associations. Tickets for the annual event were sold in advance at a discounted rate among neighborhood associations. "The purpose of Neighborhood Night at the Trop is to entertain the CONA people and give them a night out to meet one another, enjoy the game, talk among themselves, maybe exchange some ideas," said Tom Killian, CONA's second vice president and membership chairman. Killian also functions as the group's event planner and has been driving around town delivering game tickets to representatives of the groups who have signed up to participate Friday night. This year's attendance will top 300 with 21 neighborhood and civic associations participating. Killian said this is the third year CONA has organized a Neighborhood Night at the Trop, and part of the incentive to attend is a competition to recognize the neighborhood with the most members present. Along with bragging rights, the winning neighborhood gets to take a group stroll across the ballfield. Killian said this year's winner for the second year is the North Kenwood Neighborhood Association. "They've got some real baseball fans in that neighborhood, that's for sure," Killian said.
