TAMPA - A 60-year-old woman, trying to walk across the road, died Saturday night when she was hit by a Chevrolet Suburban, Hillsborough County sheriff's spokesman J.D. Callaway said. Deputies had not released the woman's name Sunday because her relatives had not been notified.

Callaway said she was crossing S 78th Street near Palm River Road in Palm River about 10:30 p.m. when she was hit.

Man briefly escapes from Tarpon police after arrest

TARPON SPRINGS - A 24-year-old man who was arrested and handcuffed escaped from the back of a police cruiser early Sunday morning and was later found hiding underneath a car, police said.

Matthew C. Reichstein of Dunedin escaped through the patrol car's rear window, which he had apparently rolled down when officers left him unattended, Tarpon Springs police said. Those windows should have been disabled but weren't.

The incident occurred about 4:30 a.m. Sunday after authorities responded to a disturbance at the Hampton Inn, 39284 U.S. 19 N, police said. Reichstein and a woman were arrested when they ignored officers' warnings to calm down, they said.

Once Reichstein was discovered missing, police initially searched the area and contacted the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office to check on his home, police said. He was later found in the hotel parking lot beneath a car.

It was unclear Sunday whether the officer who arrested Reichstein would face any disciplinary action related to the escape.

Larry Anderson, 34, of 11222 Cocoa Beach Drive, Riverview, died at the scene, the Florida Highway Patrol said. He was riding a 2004 Honda east on S.R. 674, near Carlton Lake Road, when he lost control and swerved off the roadway. The motorcycle hit a light pole.

Morry C. Williams, 42, of 3427 W Kirby St., was following Anderson on his motorcycle, troopers said. He tried to avoid the crash and was thrown into nearby bushes. Paramedics took Williams to South Bay Hospital in Sun City Center.

The motorcycle crash happened about 11:40 a.m. About 1:15 p.m., a Cessna trying to leave the Wimauma Airport could not get airborne and crashed onto S.R. 674, then exploded.
