Set alarm early to get deals

Those who hit snooze will lose when the Sunrise Sale & Pajama Party gets started Thursday.

ST. PETERSBURG - With expanded offerings including free rides aboard the Looper downtown trolley, the 33rd annual Sunrise Sale & Pajama Party promises to be the most extensive ever.

At precisely 6:43 a.m. Thursday, more than 40 downtown businesses will open, offering discounted merchandise.

Shoppers who wear pajamas will receive further discounts and some gifts.

"They'll have a lot to see and do," said Susan Robertson, marketing manager of the Pier. "It will be worth their while."

Robertson is a former president of the Beach Drive & Downtown Business Association, which recently changed its name to the Downtown Business Association and sponsors the yearly event.

The choices range from as far north as 18th Avenue N, south to Central Avenue, east to Beach Drive and west to 11th Street.

Refreshments, entertainment and giveaways from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays are included in the promotion.

The Looper will run at roughly 10-minute intervals from 7 to 11 a.m., stopping at seven destinations.

The sale began in the early 1970s as a way to lure shoppers to Beach Drive during sluggish summer sales.

A list of participants is available at www.beachdriveanddowntownbiz.com.
