  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Weekend best bets

Cool stuff to do with your time off.

Cheap thrills

Sunday is bargain day at Lowry Park Zoo, with each admission just $3. That's a savings of $11.95 per adult and $7.50 per child. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Be warned: Lots of folks love a deal, so expect crowds. The zoo is at 1101 W Sligh Ave., Tampa. (813) 935-8552; www.lowryparkzoo.com.

Tuppence the birds

It's not necessary to know the words to Chim-Chim-Cheree. All you have to do is follow the bouncing ball as the lyrics are displayed on the screen during Sing-A-Long Mary Poppins, which runs at Tampa Theatre this weekend and next. As with sing-along versions of the Sound of Music and the Wizard of Oz in previous years, patrons are invited to come in costume. Or just be prepared to trill A Spoonful of Sugar. Screenings are at 7:30 p.m. today; 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Tampa Theatre, 711 Franklin St. , Tampa. $10, $8 seniors, students and military. (813) 274-8981; www.tampatheatre.org.

Abracadabra

The Disney gang brings the stage production Mickey's Magic Show to the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in Tampa at 7 tonight; 11 a.m., 2 and 5 p.m. Saturday; and 1 and 4 p.m. Sunday. $10-$36. (813) 229-7827 or www.tbpac.org.

Art smart

Step inside the historic (and air-conditioned) Coliseum in downtown St. Petersburg for the Cool Art Show, featuring works by more than 70 artists from around the state. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission and parking are free. www.pava-artists.org.

A bathroom on the right

A couple of music legends hit town together: John Fogerty and Willie Nelson. The concert is at 730 p.m. Sunday at the Ford Amphitheatre, Interstate 4 at U.S. 301 N, Tampa. $39.50-$59.50. (813) 740-2446.
