City Plaza bank closed for repairs

TAMPA PALMS - The doors are locked, and the signs outside indicate that no one is home. Those who bank at the SunTrust Bank at City Plaza needn't worry, though. Their money is safe and sound ... at other branches. Earlier this week, the ceiling in the Tampa Palms branch began to sag to the point that SunTrust officials felt they needed to keep customers away from it. The building is now under repair. "We believe it was caused by residual damage from past hurricanes," SunTrust spokeswoman Susie Findell said. "For everyone's safety, we decided to shut the doors." The branch will be closed for four to six weeks. Shortly after locking the doors, SunTrust transferred an undisclosed amount of cash from the City Plaza branch to other branches. The money was from the night drop deposits and the ATM, and a portable ATM was placed at the site. In the meantime, New Tampa SunTrust customers can do their banking at the Hunter's Green branch at 8701 Hunter's Lake or the University Square branch at 2208 E Fowler. On Monday, a new Seven Oaks branch will open at 27637 State Road 56 in Wesley Chapel. The City Plaza branch still contains customers' safe deposit belongings, and anyone who needs access to them can contact the bank. All of the branch's safe deposit customers were notified and given instructions on how to do so, Findell said. The status of the bank's reopening will be regularly updated in a recorded message at 813 615-2990. Emily Nipps can be reached at (813) 269-5313 or nipps@sptimes.com.
