  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Bay area artist has Rhode Island show

By LENNIE BENNETT
Published July 24, 2006

More and more regional artists are exhibiting outside our area, in prestigious galleries and even museums, which is good for them and for the Tampa Bay area's reputation as an arts incubator. A recent example: the maritime paintings of Russ Kramer will be featured in a one-man show at the Museum of Yachting in Newport, R.I. He has re-created dramatic scenes from the America's Cup, beginning with the first race in 1851, often using a "you-are-there" perspective that makes you feel part of the action. (Even though you probably have as much chance of ever "being there" as babysitting Brangelina's new daughter).

Kramer, who has worked in journalism and advertising, lives and works in the Crescent Lake neighborhood of St. Petersburg with his wife and 2-year-old son.

The exhibition opens Friday and continues through Aug. 27.

To view Kramer's work, go to www.russkramer.com. For information about the exhibition, go to www.museumofyachting.org.
