Man steps into traffic, dies after SUV hits him

TAMPA - A 51-year-old man died late Saturday after stepping off a concrete median and into traffic along Hillsborough Avenue, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Bernard J. Boyar of 501 NW 77th St., No. 366, Boca Raton, died at the scene of the crash just before 11 p.m. Troopers said Boyar was standing on the median of Hillsborough Avenue, near Sawyer Road, when he ran in front of a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Juvenal Rodriguez.

Rodriguez, 42, of 7301 La Flores Circle, No. 145, Tampa, hit Boyar with the left front of his sport utility vehicle.

Rodriguez and three passengers, including a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old, were not injured.

Tampa man apparently drowns in Treasure Island

TREASURE ISLAND - A Tampa man apparently drowned Sunday near the municipal parking lot in the 11100 block of Gulf Boulevard, authorities said.

Family members called for help about 5 p.m. after Carlos M. Cardenas Rodriguez, 31, disappeared in the surf, Treasure Island police said.

Fire Department rescuers found him several hundred feet off the beach, south of where he was last seen.

He was "unresponsive," Treasure Island police said.

He was given aid and rushed to Palms of Pasadena Hospital in South Pasadena, where he was pronounced dead.

Although drowning was suspected, no cause of death was officially determined. The Medical Examiner's Office was investigating.

Gibsonton man dies after passing out at the wheel

GIBSONTON - An 80-year-old man having a medical emergency crashed his car and later died early Sunday, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Harold Close of 1003 Symmes Road, Gibsonton, was heading south on U.S. 41, north of Bloomingdale Avenue, about 1:20 a.m. when he lost consciousness at the wheel of a 1996 Cadillac.

He crossed the median and drove into a ditch, troopers said.

Doctors at Brandon Regional Hospital pronounced him dead an hour later.

Troopers said he suffered "some type of medical event."

Passenger Linda A. Michalski , 47, was uninjured.

Two juveniles injured in hit-run in St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG - Police were investigating a hit-and-run Sunday night involving two juvenile pedestrians.

The driver of a white sport utility vehicle drove away from the crash at 42nd Avenue S and 34th Street.

Police responded to the scene at 9:40 p.m.

Both children were rushed to hospitals in St. Petersburg.

One victim was taken to Bayfront Medical Center.

The other victim was taken to All Children's Hospital.

St. Petersburg police had no further information late Sunday.
