They kicked off their run Monday with the sun shining on the Capitol steps in Tallahassee.

Now, participants in the Key Training Center's annual Run for the Money are hoping the good weather holds.

The run, which stretches 180 miles to the center's Lecanto campus, benefits the center's efforts to help the mentally disabled. And it includes several Citrus County celebrity runners, including Sheriff Jeff Dawsy, who helped kick off the run at 6 a.m. Monday.

Three runners - Dawsy, a Sheriff's Office sergeant and a local businessman - ran 20 miles down U.S. 19 before stopping "in the middle of nowhere," according to Cabot McBride, the center's director of housing and residential services.

Several runners were set to continue running Monday night and then today, McBride said Monday afternoon.

The run will end on Saturday, when participants arrive at the center's main Lecanto campus for a celebration and fundraising telethon.

The annual fundraiser got off to a big start Friday night during the Key's annual dinner and auction.
