Paradiso prepares for first Pirates season

By BRIAN SUMERS
Published July 25, 2006

CRYSTAL RIVER - In less than one week, the Anthony Paradiso era begins, at least in its regular-season version.

But don't try to get the Pirates' new head coach excited. He said he does not expect it will be much different than being an assistant at Timber Creek High in Orlando.

"To me, it's still the same mindset," he said. "I guess I'll be making the same decisions."

Before practice begins Monday, the Pirates will test players fitness levels to check who became stronger and quicker over the summer.

About 60 players have been working out regularly at the school.

"I'm not planning to bring out a football for the first three practices," Paradiso said. "I need to get these kids over the hump. The hump is lasting four quarters."

There will be nothing unusual about coaching fall practices, Paradiso said. He's already been in charge since March, so any jitters are already gone.

"That came in the spring," he said. "I got that out of the way now."

The regular season begins Aug. 25 when the Pirates host Belleview. They are also scheduled for a preseason game Aug. 18 when they host Williston.
