PINELLAS PARK - A 58-year-old man was found dead in the back of a 1984 Chevrolet van in Pinellas Park on Wednesday evening. The man, whose name was not released, was found around 7:30 p.m. with a rope around his neck. The van was parked at a shopping plaza at 66th Street N and 102nd Avenue N. The exact cause of death had not been determined.

ST. PETERSBURG - Police arrested five women Tuesday after getting complaints about massage parlors operating without licenses.

Autopsy: Coaster rider died of natural causes

TAMPA - Thomas Welch, a 52-year-old Palm Harbor man who died after riding the Gwazi roller coaster at Busch Gardens, suffered from hypertensive heart disease and died of natural causes, a medical examiner's report said.

Welch was pronounced dead at 11:01 a.m. Monday, about an hour after he rode the coaster, a wooden ride named for a mythical beast, part tiger, part lion. Park officials have said the coaster had nothing to do with the death.

The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner's Office found evidence of hypertensive heart disease, according to Tammie Lung, an office assistant.

Welch asked for medical help shortly after he got off the ride, said Busch spokesman Gerard Hoeppner.

Emergency crews were called, and Welch was taken to University Community Hospital in full cardiac arrest, said hospital spokeswoman Liz Nolan. He never left the emergency room, she said.

Welch's family has declined to comment about the cause of death.

Hyde Park rapist still a threat, expert determines

TAMPA - The man known as the Hyde Park rapist still isn't fit to re-enter society, prosecutors said Wednesday. An expert who recently evaluated Bobby Joe Helms, 48, determined that he continues to meet the criteria of a sexually violent predator and should remain at the Arcadia facility for sex criminals who are civilly committed under the Jimmy Ryce Act. That law forces them into treatment after they finish their prison sentences.
