Pasco workers bring home less bacon

By ROBERT TRIGAUX
Published July 31, 2006

A worker in Hillsborough County making the county's average weekly wage makes $51 more in five days than his or her counterpart in Pinellas and a whopping $181 more weekly than a person in Pasco County.

Sorry, Pasco. Based on that pay data, a Hillsborough worker could work a four-day work week and get paid more than Pasco employees do on a five-day schedule.

These wage figures for the fourth quarter of 2005 were unveiled last week by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. For the record, Pasco's average weekly wage dipped in that quarter to $600, while Pinellas and Hillsborough wages increased slightly to $730 and $781, respectively. Figures for Hernando and Citrus counties were not included.

The good news: Pasco's employment grew a hefty 7.9 percent in the fourth quarter last year over the same quarter in 2004. Larger Pinellas and Hillsborough registered employment growth of 0.6 and 2.7 percent, respectively.

Florida's Lee County, which includes Fort Myers, enjoyed a burst of 9.2 percent employment growth in that period, making it the greatest over-the-year percentage increase among the largest counties in the United States.
