Tired? You should be

By WILLIAM R. LEVESQUE

Sure, a lack of sleep makes you tired and cranky. But now researchers say it makes you more likely to dislike or even hate your job.

That's the conclusion of a University of Florida study, which noted the effects of sleeplessness on job satisfaction, a connection that seemed most pronounced among women. One possible explanation, researchers say, is women are often expected to be more nurturing and emotionally expressive than men.

The study examined the sleeping habits of 45 employees of a large southeastern U.S. regional insurance office and found those not getting enough shuteye weren't whistling as they worked. With the National Sleep Foundation saying Americans average 6.8 hours of sleep on weekdays, bosses might expect a few of their bleary-eyed employees aren't just exhausted. They're also tired of the boss.
