Woman who tried to murder sons released for treatment

INVERNESS — A woman charged with trying to murder her two mentally challenged sons in May was released on a $1,000 bail today, after a judge agreed that she needed mental treatment instead of incarceration. Krystal Garza, 37, will be allowed to live with her father in Citrus County, but can have no contact with her two sons, who are in Texas, or her two daughters, who still live in Homosassa. Garza, apparently overcome by the strain of raising two 14-year-olds with cerebral palsy, ran a hose from the exhaust of her car into the car and went for a drive with her sons inside.
A passing motorist saw what was occurring and called the sheriff’s office. The boys survived and were treated and released from a local hospital. Garza still faces two counts of attempted first degree murder and faces a maximum of 60 years in prison if convicted at trial.
She will also try to find a facility willing to give her mental health treatment while out on bail, but that could take up to a month, her attorney said.
