Sutter relieved to join elite in Cooperstown
Emotions get the best of Bruce Sutter, who made the Hall of Fame on his 13th try. "I am in awe," the former reliever said during Sunday's induction ceremony in Cooperstown, N.Y. "Father Time took away my arm and my hair and changed the color of my beard, but he can't take away my passion for the game," said Sutter, who had 300 saves in a 13-year career. Also inducted were 16 men - and one woman, a Hall of Fame first - from the Negro League and pre-Negro League eras.
OUT OF BOUNDS
ONE MORE BODE CRASH, BUT THIS ONE WAS GOOD:Bode Miller, the Olympic skier who failed to medal in five events at this year's Torino Games, traded the slopes for leftfield and made the catch of the game for the Nashua (N.H.) Pride. The Pride signed the New Hampshire native to a one-game contract for Saturday's independent minor-league game against the Brockton Rox. The move was designed to help Miller raise money for charity. His appearance doubled the team's normal attendance and collected $5,000 for cancer research. Miller didn't get any hits, but he stole one from Brockton when he made a leaping catch, then tumbled onto the warning track. The crowd went crazy and teammates mobbed him. "It's fun to watch, but it's more fun to play," he said. Nashua won 12-2, perhaps Miller's biggest win this year.
QUESTION OF THE DAY
What was the most saves Bruce Sutter had in a season?
QUOTABLE
"If I go out and drink one night, I guarantee the next day I am getting heavily replenished with water and massages. I respect my body tremendously."
- JEREMY SHOCKEY, New York Giants tight end and master of internal contradiction
ANSWER
Sutter had 45 in 1984, tying the major-league season record. The mark stood for two years.
