TAMPA - Tampa police arrested a man early Wednesday who is suspected of leading Pinellas deputies on a cross-bay chase that ended in a three car collision on Swann Avenue. Jeffrey L. Washington, 25, of Tampa was being held without bail in the Hillsborough County Jail, charged with of fleeing to elude police, leaving the scene of a crash, grand theft of a motor vehicle and related charges. Tuesday night, Pinellas deputies, using their new high-tech license plate scanners spotted a Chevrolet Impala reported stolen out of Orange County in a Seminole parking lot. Pinellas authorities said deputies tried to stop the car, and it rammed a deputy's cruiser and took off, according to Pinellas authorities. This set off a chase that took them across the Howard Frankland Bridge, with deputies and Tampa police losing the car until it turned up a in a three-car accident on Swann Avenue near Henderson Boulevard. After the crash, the driver of the car fled, leaving behind a female passenger, who was taken into custody. Washington was subsequently arrested in the vicinity.
