  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Music

A good way to waste some time

Two of the chummiest songs in Pixar's animated hit Cars come courtesy of country cool guy Brad Paisley. That meeting of the minds makes sense, too. Like the beloved 'toon factory, the 33-year-old West Virginia native is a crazy-talented mix of cutting wit and family values, of technical wizardry (he's a guitar-picking monster) and aw-shucks songwriting. He has no interest in playing the Nashville/Hollywood game (well, except for marrying Hollywood actor Kimberly Williams). And yet his album sales, including those for 2005's excellent Time Well Wasted, are usually just as mighty as any of his star-powered peers.

Last August, I had the privilege of weaseling my way into a listening party for Paisley's latest disc at Tampa's Dallas Bull bar. The place was stuffed with adoring, slobbering fans. And yet when Paisley took the makeshift stage, which was just a few feet from the mob, he was calm and gracious and dryly funny. He appreciated the hubbub, but at the same time, it sure wasn't gonna expand his hat size any. A humble, hunky, humorous honky-tonker. I like that.

Brad Paisley, with much-ballyhooed up-and-comers Eric Church and Danielle Peck, performs at 8 p.m. Saturday, Ford Amphitheatre, Interstate 4 at U.S. 301 N, Tampa. $24-$47.50. (813) 740-2446, (813) 287-8844 or (727) 898-2100.
