  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Get Away

A meet-and-tweet gathering

If you prefer your friends to wear feathers instead of fur, check out the Suncoast Avian Society's 31st annual Exotic and Pet Bird Show this weekend at the Coliseum.

Birds from all over the world will be featured, with sanctioned judging both days, and more than 60 vendors will offer a range of items, from baby birds and supplies to gifts with an avian theme.

You are welcome to bring your feathered friends for a spa treatment (wing and toenail clipping at 2 p.m. both days), but they must be caged.

If you don't have a friend to bring, buy a raffle ticket. Baby birds with cages are among the prizes, with the grand prize a baby Moluccan cockatoo like the one pictured here. Proceeds benefit the nonprofit Suncoast Avian Society, which sponsors scholarships in avian specialties and offers support to other bird organizations.

The show is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Coliseum, 535 Fourth Ave. N, St. Petersburg. $4, under age 12 free. (727) 726-6864 or www.suncoastaviansociety.org.
