  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

County teens match skills with the nation's best

Nearly 300 U.S. Bowling Congress youth members from across the country will battle for an opportunity to compete in a nationally-televised arena final Sunday in Orlando at the USBC Teen Masters.

Two teens from Pinellas County were in good shape Friday to win the so-called "High School Bowling Championship," which started Tuesday. After 18 games, Clearwater's Jon Brady (3,512) was in 16th. The top 32 boys advance to match play today. Palm Harbor's Chris Grube and Joe May, Tampa's Jay Vogt, Walter Hill and Daniel Hougton and Spring Hill's Joe Del Negro also competed.

The lone girls representative from the area is - who else - Ashly Galante from Palm Harbor. The Tarpon Springs Sponger ruled the PCHSL last season and also was named USBC's Sport Bowler of the Year. She led the pack Friday at the Teen Masters with 3,651 pins through 18 games.

Conducted on challenging USBC Sport Bowling lane conditions, the Teen Masters has held qualifying events throughout the year leading up to the national finals. Once eight boys and eight girls remain in match play, action shifts over to the arena setup at Universal Studios Orlando today and Sunday.

The top two boys and two girls will battle for their respective championships on the ESPN2 telecast, scheduled to air Oct. 16 at 9:30 p.m. The two winners then face off to determine the overall Teen Masters champion. The boys and girls champions are each guaranteed $7,500 scholarships.

NABI: St. Petersburg's Les Foerster finished third overall at last week's Club 577 meeting at AMF Bradenton, averaging 191. Foerster lost by just seven-pins (212-205) to the eventual champion, Ken Rush, from Bradenton, who took home the $270 first-place prize with a 195 average.

This Sunday, the National Amateur Bowler's Inc. will be at Orange Bowl Lanes in Lakeland for Club 577 again, with a strike-pot of $156 and a $210 jackpot. Squad times are 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., with an auto-cut first squad with six or more bowlers. Those over 60 years old will have a senior cut combination of both squads. Call (863) 667-4779 or visit centralflorida.bowlnabi.com for more details.

CHATTER: Ron Sullivan struck eleven in a row for a 299 feature game at Twedt's for an 833-pin night that landed him atop all scores, all houses for the week. Tricia McKee led some fine women's scores this week with a 699 at Seminole, alongside Sunrise's Maureen Gula (237/662) and Dunedin's Linda Crayton (624). Twedt's youths James Campbell (633) and Cory Misura (640) led the youngsters.

And, in the 100 and Over Tournament at Sunrise on July 30, Frank Wolfinger and David Suggs took home top honors, including a 300 from Suggs. Held once a month, rotating between Seminole and Sunrise, the 100 and Over Tournament is a sanctioned doubles tournament, with a mix of men or women, but the combined age of the team must equal 100 years old. Seminole will host the next one Aug. 27 at 1 p.m. Payouts are determined by entries. And as a reminder, National Bowling Week runs Aug. 26 through Sept. 1.
