LARGO - A Largo man was charged Friday with two counts of animal cruelty after authorities discovered a dead wolf hybrid in his yard. A code enforcement officer was called on Thursday afternoon to Jimmy Walton's home, at 424 7th Ave. NE, to investigate a complaint of overgrown grass and foul odors, police said. The officer found four malnourished animals that appeared to be wolves. A fifth one was discovered partially inside a large container filled with some type of liquid. That animal was dead. "Our best guess is the dog tried to find some relief from the horrible flea infestation and he got in there and died," said Capt. James Precious, patrol division commander with the Largo Police Department. "The other dogs, too, were really suffering." Police rounded up Walton, 44, on Friday afternoon, charging him with the two felonies. He was taken to the Pinellas County Jail. A wolf hybrid looks like a wolf, but is at least a quarter-part dog, Precious said. Hybrids do not fall under federal legislation that requires wolf owners to have special pet licenses. The four wolf hybrids were taken to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
