Woman pretended to be Katrina victim, police say

A Largo woman has been charged with falsely claiming to be a Hurricane Katrina victim to get money from the government and Catholic Charities, according to an arrest report.

St. Petersburg police arrested Katherine Lee Rumph-Smith, 36, on Thursday on a felony charge of scheming to defraud. The amount of money involved was not released, but an arrest report says she got money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Catholic Charities in 2005. Rumph-Smith also used banking information from Catholic Charities to obtain an online pay trust account and fraudulent checks, the report says.

Fire spoils plans to expand thriving Plant City winery

PLANT CITY - Joey Keel and Chase Marden looked forward to expanding their thriving winery, but flames swallowed up 85 percent of their inventory Thursday night.

The fire engulfed the barn where they had stored most of their inventory of fruit-flavored wines. About $500,000 in wine and machinery and approximately $150,000 in furniture for a new building were destroyed.

The actual Keel & Curley Winery on Thonotosassa Road was untouched. Some of the losses were insured, the owners said.

Officials said the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
