Insurer pampers car-crash victims

Concierges were never so popular. We have real estate concierges, medical concierges, even Critter Concierge, a Frisco, Texas, pet waste removal service.

The Progressive Group of Insurance Cos. began offering a "concierge level" of claims service throughout the country three years ago, and last week said it is expanding it's Tampa training center to teach more people how to be claims concierges.

Sure, it's a marketing ploy. But it's a hit with customers. The service boasts well-lit, spotless garages where claims representatives write estimates before a body shop takes the vehicle to be repaired. Customers get to wait in an area described as "modern, using soothing colors and dimmed lighting."

The fourth-largest auto insurer in Florida, Progressive expects to have about 50 concierge service centers in use by year's end. The expanded service, said a spokeswoman, will come at no additional cost.
