Toddler nearly drowns in above-ground pool

HOLIDAY - A 22-month-old girl was expected to survive after nearly drowning in a family swimming pool Sunday, according to the Pasco Sheriff's Office.

Rebecca Sutherland was "alert and responsive" when she was transported from her home at 3851 Carioca Road to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, according to Doug Tobin, spokesman for the Pasco Sheriff's Office.

The girl was apparently later transferred to All Children's Hospital. Officials there declined to give any information on her condition.

County rescuers were called to the home on Carioca Road about 11 a.m.

Relatives told authorities that the child had walked out of the house unnoticed. She was found face-down in the above-ground pool. Relatives estimated she must have been in the water for about two minutes. One family member performed CPR at the scene, according to authorities.

The girl was at the Aloha Gardens subdivision home with her 21-year-old father and other relatives, Tobin said.

"He said she went out of sight for a few minutes," Tobin said.

Tobin could not provide the father's name.

County records show the white ranch-style home is owned by Kenneth F. and Jeannine Sutherland, but Tobin did not know the relationship between the couple and the child. Attempts to reach the Sutherlands by phone and in person were unsuccessful Sunday.

No one has been charged in the incident.
