Smoke detectors alert 4 families to nighttime apartment fire

Published August 9, 2006

TEMPLE TERRACE - Four families were displaced after an early morning blaze consumed their apartment building Tuesday.

Firefighters responded to the Terrace Club Apartments at 7305 Heritage Hills Drive just after 3:30 a.m. It was under control within a half hour.

No one was hurt. Residents were alerted to the trouble thanks to working smoke detectors, Temple Terrace spokesman Michael Dunn said.

One family told investigators they saw flames shooting from a master bedroom closet, but the cause of the fire is still being investigated, Dunn said.

Total damage was estimated at $300,000 to $400,000. The American Red Cross was helping the families find temporary shelter.
