The Pinellas County School Board will meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the district administration building, 301 Fourth St. SW, Largo.

The public is invited. Residents who want to speak on either agenda or nonagenda items can do so by filling out a form at or before the meeting.

Residents may speak about any item on the agenda not involving a hearing on employee discipline by registering five minutes before the item is introduced.

The meeting will be televised at 6 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays for two weeks after the meeting date.

All broadcasts are shown on WPDS-Ch. 14, which also appears on Knology Channel 14 and Bright House Networks Channel 14.

Volunteers are needed to help judge Teach for Excellence Grant applications. Judging will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 15 in the Lighthouse Conference Center at the Stavros Institute, 12100 Starkey Road, Largo.

Judges are not required to be educators; community judges will be paired with school-based judges to explain educational terminology of the grants.

Judges will be briefed on procedures, and a continental breakfast will be served before judging begins. Contact Ann Stretch by e-mail at or by phone at 727 588-4816, ext. 27.

Elizabeth Rehnke, 18, daughter of Dr. Ernest and Linda Rehnke, has been named the recipient of the 2005-06 Mattioli/Noble Recognition Award, given annually by Mattioli School of Music and Arts in St. Pete Beach.

The award is the school's highest honor for outstanding achievement. In her 13 years as a member of the school, Rehnke amassed six division wins at the Tri-County Music Festival, and a state superior rating in piano from the Florida Vocal Association.

Rehnke is the 2006 valedictorian of Northside Christian School and plans to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville this fall.

Three Pinellas County high school students participated this summer in Florida State University's 2006 Young Scholars Program (YSP), an annual residential science and mathematics program for Florida high school students.

Manoj Kannusamy of East Lake High School, Emily Lin of Palm Harbor University High School and Han Zhu of St. Petersburg High School were three of 40 students chosen for the program from nearly 200 applicants.

The six-week program began June 4 and ended July 15.

YSP participants receive scholarships for $2,800, which covers the cost of room and board, tuition, lab fees and computer time.

Supported with funding from the university, YSP targets students who show potential for careers in science, engineering and health professions. The curriculum in- cludes formal course work in computer science and science ethics for all students, as well as an elective course in molecular biology or modern physics.

The Pinellas Education Foundation has announced that David Warner, a 2006 graduate of Clearwater High School, is the recipient of the 2006 Steve Georgiadis Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded to a Pinellas County high school baseball player who demonstrates teamwork, leadership, high academic performance and love for the game.

Steve Georgiadis, a 1988 graduate of Seminole High School, was the 1988 Pinellas County Player of the Year and attended the University of Florida on a baseball scholarship.

Georgiadis died after shoulder surgery during his sophomore year at UF.

His number has been retired at Seminole High and the University of Florida.

Warner, whose $1,500 scholarship will be applied to his college education at the University of Central Florida, is also a recipient of a 2006 Derby Lane Scholarship, and was a member of the Clearwater High School varsity baseball and golf teams.
