Schools locked down as police seek wanted man

LARGO - Two schools were briefly locked down Tuesday while police pursued a man wanted on allegations of aggravated assault with a firearm. No one was injured and the man was ultimately apprehended.

On Monday, authorities received a report of a man with a gun at 85 21st Ter. SE, near East Bay Drive and Starkey Road. By the time officers arrived, Jeffrey Weatherby, 22, was gone and efforts to track him down were unsuccessful, police said.

Officers continued their search about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the area near Ridge Road and West Bay Drive, prompting a 30-minute lockdown at Largo Middle and Mildred Helms Elementary schools, officials said.

Police later got in touch with Weatherby by phone and persuaded him to meet officers at Largo Mall, where he was arrested. He was being held at the Pinellas County Jail in lieu of $5,000.
